WEBAug 25, 2013 · Never ever ball mill potassium perchlorate and aluminum together in a ball mill. There are only a few mixes of components that can be mill together. This does include charcoal stars as Mumbles mentioned, as they contain the same basic chemicals, but in a different ratio. If you are not aware, that includes Potassium Nitrate (KNO3), Sulfur (S), Charcoal .

The potassium nitrate grinds better with the larger 1/2" media. The sweet spot for charcoal in my rudimentary testing was 5/16" diameter.

Using a rock tumbler, you can make black powder faster by milling the charcoal and potassium nitrate separately. 3 component milling takes much longer to make good powder. Don't anybody get your knickers in a twist over that statement.
